Hallux Valgus: Understanding This Big Toe Deformity

Hallux valgus, also known as a bunion, is a deviation of the big toe toward the inside of the foot, often causing a painful bump on the side. This deformity can make walking difficult and lead to daily discomfort.

Risk Factors and Symptoms

Hallux valgus can be caused by wearing shoes that are too narrow, genetic predispositions, or structural foot abnormalities. Women are more likely to develop this condition, partly due to wearing high heels or pointed-toe shoes.

Symptoms include a painful bump at the base of the big toe, swelling, and sometimes rubbing or calluses around the affected area.

Management and Treatment

To manage hallux valgus, wearing wide and comfortable shoes is recommended. Neurosensory taping can be used to slightly correct the alignment of the big toe and relieve pain. Reflexology may also help reduce tension and improve comfort.
